On April 17, 2015, Cassandra Lee Cassidy, a 24-year-old drug and alcohol rehabilitation worker from Las Vegas, Nevada, was fatally shot near her workplace. The incident occurred when Cassidy arrived at her shift at a house in the 1300 block of Westwind Road, near the intersection of West Charleston Boulevard and Lindell Road, which was owned by Solutions Recovery Inc., a drug and alcohol recovery center.
Cassidy's death was a result of a confrontation involving two frightened females who
had been in a car with several male suspects. According to testimony, the females, including Raven Gordon, had been riding in a white, two-door Volvo with the suspects but got out and ran after realizing the suspects were not taking them to their intended destination as promised. The females approached Cassidy, who had just parked her car, and asked for her help and the use of her cell phone. As they were using Cassidy's phone to contact one of the females' fathers, the suspects returned in their vehicle. One of the suspects, a 15-year-old boy later identified as Christopher Brown, stepped out of the car and fired a revolver, while another suspect, Michael De Angelo Scott, 21, fired several rounds from a. 25-caliber semi-automatic handgun from inside the car.
Cassidy was the only one hit by the gunfire and was pronounced dead at University Medical Center. The two females who had approached her managed to escape unharmed.
The investigation led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Christopher Brown, who was 15 years old at the time of the shooting, was turned in by his mother after she saw a video of the incident circulated by Metro Police. Brown's mother had posted on Facebook asking if anyone had seen her son, as he had gone missing. She eventually tracked him down and took him to Metro headquarters to surrender on April 20, 2015. Brown was booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center but was later ruled to be tried as an adult following a juvenile court hearing.
Michael De Angelo Scott, 21, was the other suspect arrested in connection with Cassidy's death. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on May 18, 2015. Scott faces multiple charges, including one count of murder, conspiracy to murder, illegally discharging a gun, and two counts of attempted murder. A preliminary hearing determined that there was enough evidence to present these charges to a jury.
Both suspects were linked to the crime through testimony from witnesses, including Raven Gordon and another female who were in the car with the suspects, as well as from Jehru Petty-Williams, who was in the back seat of the car during the shooting. After the shooting, Scott and Brown visited Jacqueline Lopez's house, where they discussed the incident, with Brown stating he had shot a 'white girl' and Scott claiming he had shot at the girls but did not know if he had hit anyone.
Cassidy's mother, Carol Kirkum, was deeply affected by the loss of her daughter and attended several court hearings related to the case. She expressed her desire for justice for both suspects and described the emotional toll of listening to the details of her daughter's murder in court.
