In the late hours of May 29, 2015, a violent encounter in Las Vegas cut short the life of 24-year-old Richard Najera. The young man, a male, was on Fremont Street near Oakey Boulevard when a confrontation with a group of individuals turned deadly. The incident was not a random act of violence but rather a targeted attack rooted in gang rivalry.
That night, five individuals associated with the "Youngsters Taking Kontrol" gang were reportedly driving through the area when they spotted
Najera, whom they identified as a member of the rival "Barrio Naked City" gang. A physical altercation ensued, with the group getting out of their vehicle to assault Najera. After the initial beating, the assailants departed, only to return a short time later, this time armed with a firearm. In the second confrontation, Najera was shot and killed.
Witnesses at the scene provided authorities with a description of the suspects' vehicle, a Honda Accord. Responding officers quickly located the car and a pursuit followed. The five occupants abandoned the vehicle in a nearby neighborhood and attempted to flee on foot, but two were apprehended shortly after. The driver was identified as 18-year-old Yors "Cuete" Garcia-Mier, and his passenger was 17-year-old Nicholas Pedro "Silent" Cortes.
The investigation continued, leading to the arrests of three other suspects. Jeiszon "Smiley" Valles, 21, was taken into custody in June and is believed to have been the gunman. Benjamin "Habit" Hernandez, 18, and Miguel "Tripps" Salazar were also arrested in connection with the murder. During an interview with detectives, Hernandez admitted his involvement in the initial assault, stating that he and the others had beaten Najera. He claimed, however, that he remained in the car during the second encounter when the fatal shots were fired. All five suspects were subsequently indicted on charges including murder with the use of a deadly weapon, robbery with the use of a deadly weapon, and conspiracy.
