On April 5, 2016, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives initiated an investigation following the discovery of a deceased male in a vacant apartment. The body was found in an apartment located in the 200 block of West Boston Avenue, near the Stratosphere Casino and Hotel, after police received complaints about heavy foot traffic in and out of the boarded-up apartment.
The victim was identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Javier Aguero Zuniga, a
30-year-old male. Zuniga had an extensive criminal record, including convictions for several felony counts of drug possession, auto burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, trespassing, and battery, with these offenses occurring between 2004 and February 2016.
The investigation revealed that the apartment had been secured with plywood covering the door around 9 p.m. on Sunday. However, on Monday, a neighbor noticed that the plywood had been removed from the door. Upon entering the apartment, officers found Zuniga deceased with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest, which was later confirmed by the Clark County coroner's office.
As of the time of the report, no suspects had been identified, and the motive for the homicide was unknown.
