Sean Patrick Bryan, a 40-year-old White/Caucasian man, was killed during the early morning hours of June 22, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a homicide that investigators connected to a violent robbery committed shortly before his body was discovered. Bryan’s death initially came to the attention of authorities as a vehicle fire, but the investigation quickly revealed that the flames were concealing a shooting death rather than causing it.
At approximately 4:20 a.m., Las Vegas Metropolitan Police were called to the Five Star Tavern at 2425 North Rainbow Boulevard following a robbery. Police said at least two people whose faces were concealed with bandannas robbed the tavern, its bartender, and two customers. Surveillance footage showed the robbers leaving in a silver Volkswagen Jetta. Investigators later determined that the getaway vehicle was the same type of car Bryan had been driving, creating what police described as a connection between the tavern robbery and the events that followed.
Roughly 20 minutes after the robbery, at about 4:40 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the 6600 block of Castor Tree Way, a residential area near Rainbow Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue, after someone reported a vehicle on fire. Once firefighters extinguished the flames, Bryan was found inside the Volkswagen Jetta, behind the wheel. What might initially have appeared to be a fatal vehicle fire became a homicide investigation when detectives discovered evidence that Bryan had been shot. The Clark County Coroner’s Office later determined that he died from a gunshot wound to the head and officially classified his death as a homicide. The fire itself was not what killed him.
Surveillance footage provided investigators with another important piece of the timeline. Bryan’s Jetta and a dark-colored SUV, described in reports as having custom rims, were seen arriving in the Castor Tree Way neighborhood at approximately the same time. As the SUV drove away, the Jetta erupted in flames. Investigators also determined that the Jetta had been seen in the neighborhood before the tavern robbery, adding to the mystery of how Bryan, the vehicle, the robbery, and the occupants of the SUV were connected.
Metro homicide detectives publicly announced that they believed the Five Star Tavern robbery and Bryan’s killing were connected. They sought help identifying the dark SUV and the people inside it, as well as anyone who knew about Bryan’s activities or the circumstances surrounding the robbery. Although police referred to the perpetrators of the tavern robbery as multiple masked individuals, the publicly available reports did not identify any of them by name or establish precisely what role Bryan may have played in the events leading to his death. The available information also did not establish whether Bryan was killed before the Jetta reached Castor Tree Way or immediately before the vehicle was set ablaze.
Bryan was born on December 18, 1976. An obituary published after his death said he had attended Loara High School and served in the United States Army. He left behind his parents, a sister, a daughter, three sons, and other relatives. His death occurred far from an ordinary setting: investigators were faced with a shooting victim inside a deliberately burning vehicle, a robbery minutes earlier, a suspected getaway car, and an unidentified SUV disappearing from the scene as the fire began.
No reliable publicly available online reporting located identifies an arrest, named murder suspect, criminal charge, trial, or conviction in connection with Bryan’s killing. The last substantial public reports located describe investigators appealing for information about the SUV, its occupants, the tavern robbers, and the circumstances surrounding Bryan’s death.
