On the evening of October 1, 2017, James "Sonny" Melton, a 29-year-old male registered nurse from Big Sandy, Tennessee, was attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife, Heather. The couple was celebrating their first wedding anniversary. Suddenly, a barrage of gunfire erupted from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, targeting the crowd of concertgoers.
In a final act of love and protection, Sonny shielded his wife from the bullets.
While Heather, a surgeon, was unharmed, Sonny was fatally wounded. He was one of 60 people killed in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, an event that also left hundreds injured.
The perpetrator was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a high-stakes gambler. After carrying out the attack, Paddock was found dead in his hotel room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement officials conducted an extensive investigation into the massacre. The investigation concluded that Paddock acted alone, and no other suspects were identified or arrested in connection with the shooting.
