The event unfolded in the evening when a group of teenagers, including Justise, were walking away from a McDonald's restaurant located near U.S. Highway 95 and West Ann Road. As they walked through a neighborhood just north of the restaurant, a vehicle approached, and someone opened fire on the group.
Justise Allen was fatally shot, and another teenager, a 19-year-old, was injured and transported to the hospital in unknown condition.
The investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department revealed that the shooting was possibly gang-related. Members of the street gang 'NTB' had been celebrating a birthday party at the McDonald's, where they were on Facebook Live communicating with members of a rival gang known as 'YNIC.' During this Facebook Live session, Amir Gibson, a member of the YNIC gang, displayed a handgun and asked for the NTB members' location. After the Facebook Live was terminated, the NTB members left the restaurant and walked to a nearby neighborhood, where Gibson, wearing a dark-colored hoodie, began shooting at the group. At least two witnesses identified Gibson as the shooter, and surveillance video confirmed his presence at the crime scene.
Following the shooting, the LVMPD spent hours at the scene investigating and trying to restore a sense of safety to the community. Family members and friends of Justise Allen held a vigil on Dramatic Way and Ann Road, where the shooting occurred, to honor her memory. Justise's loved ones described her as a sweet and lively person whose smile lit up the room.
On June 19, 2018, Amir Gibson was arrested and charged with murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Justise Allen's death. Despite his arrest, Gibson denied involvement in the shooting, claiming he was not in the area at the time of the incident. However, the evidence gathered by detectives, including witness identifications and surveillance footage, linked him to the crime.
The community and law enforcement continued to grapple with the aftermath of the shooting, emphasizing the need for safety and the importance of identifying and apprehending those responsible for such violent acts.
