In the early morning hours of Thursday, August 23, 2018, the life of Otis Lee Turner, a 28-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short in Las Vegas, Nevada. A passing driver discovered his body on the side of Walnut Road near Alto Avenue at approximately 12:30 a.m. and flagged down an officer, initially believing he had been the victim of a hit-and-run. However, upon closer examination, first responders discovered that Turner had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The Clark County coroner's office would later confirm that he died from these injuries, ruling his death a homicide. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's homicide section immediately began the arduous task of piecing together the final moments of Turner's life. With no witnesses to the shooting, detectives worked to establish a timeline of his movements leading up to his death. Their efforts led them to surveillance footage that proved crucial in identifying a suspect. This breakthrough resulted in an arrest warrant being issued for 36-year-old Johnny A. Wilson.
The pursuit of Wilson extended beyond Nevada's borders. Acting on information from Las Vegas police, the Nebraska State Patrol located Wilson on a Greyhound bus traveling to Omaha. When the bus made a stop in Lincoln, Nebraska, SWAT officers boarded the vehicle and took him into custody without incident, bringing a swift development to the investigation into Turner's murder.
Otis Lee Turner Jr. was born on February 2, 1990, in San Diego, California, and had moved to Las Vegas at the age of 13. He was a father to two children, a son and a daughter. His family remembered him for his ability to bring laughter and joy to any room, his jovial smile, and his larger-than-life personality.
