In an east Las Vegas neighborhood on April 25, 2019, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 34-year-old Karen Gotidoc Lopez. Originally from the Philippines, the young mother's life was cut short during a violent altercation with her ex-husband, Fernando Lopez. The tragic events unfolded in front of their young child, adding a devastating layer to the incident.
That afternoon, Karen and Fernando Lopez arrived in a vehicle with their four-year-old son.
An argument that began in the car spilled out onto Silver Saddle Street. As they exited the vehicle, Fernando was armed with a handgun. In a desperate act, Karen knocked on a neighbor's door and handed her child to the residents who were in their driveway, pleading for them to take the boy.
As the confrontation between the former couple intensified, one of the neighbors attempted to de-escalate the situation. When that failed, he retrieved a rifle from his home. Fernando Lopez then opened fire, shooting Karen in the chest. This prompted an exchange of gunfire between Fernando and the armed neighbor. During the shootout, a second resident was also struck by gunfire.
When Las Vegas Metropolitan Police arrived at the scene, they found both Karen and Fernando Lopez with gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead. The second resident who had been shot was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The Clark County Coroner's Office later ruled Karen's death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. Fernando Lopez's death was also ruled a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds, though it was initially unclear if he was killed by the neighbor's return fire or a self-inflicted wound. Their child was unharmed and was placed in the care of Child Protective Services. No other suspects were sought in connection with the deadly shooting. Court records revealed a history of conflict between the former couple, who had divorced the previous year.
