On March 27, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in a residential area of Las Vegas, Nevada, resulting in the deaths of 17-year-old Alex Figueroa and his 15-year-old brother, Kevin Figueroa. The incident took place at a home located on the 3900 block of Chasing Heart Way, near the intersection of Las Vegas and Lamb boulevards.
The Metropolitan Police Department received a 911 call around 10:30 p.m. from a neighbor who reported hearing gunshots.
During the call, the dispatcher could also hear the sound of gunshots. Upon arrival, police found that the situation was dire, with a teenage girl escaping from an upstairs window of the home. She informed the officers that her two brothers were still inside the house.
Police identified the suspect as Alejandro Figueroa, the 45-year-old father of the two teenage boys. According to the investigation, Alejandro Figueroa had been drinking and handling a firearm, which led to a series of tragic events. One of the teenage boys had called the police to report that their father was handling firearms while intoxicated. This call apparently escalated the situation, as Figueroa became upset and shot both of his sons before turning the gun on himself.
The Clark County Coroner's office later confirmed that 17-year-old Alex Figueroa and 15-year-old Kevin Figueroa were shot multiple times, with their deaths ruled as homicides. Alejandro Figueroa died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, which was ruled a suicide. The coroner's office provided these details after identifying the bodies on March 31, 2020.
The incident highlighted the extreme stress and potential dangers that can arise within families, especially during times of heightened tension such as the statewide coronavirus lockdown that was in place at the time. Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department emphasized the importance of seeking help during stressful times, urging anyone feeling overwhelmed to contact therapists at the Family Justice Center or by calling 2-1-1.
There were no arrests made in this case, as the suspect, Alejandro Figueroa, took his own life immediately after the shootings. The only other individual involved was the teenage girl, who was unharmed and had managed to escape the house by climbing out of an upstairs window. The mother of the children was not present at the home during the incident.
