In the early morning hours of September 19, 2020, the life of 34-year-old Hispanic male Octavio Mejia was tragically cut short in east Las Vegas. The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 1700 block of Arden Street, near the intersection of Lamb and Charleston boulevards. Responding to a call, police officers discovered Mejia lying in the road, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported him to University Medical Center in
a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite their efforts, Mejia succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Clark County coroner's office later officially ruled his death a homicide, citing the cause as a gunshot wound to his upper right extremity and abdomen, which resulted in severe vascular and visceral injuries.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department believe that the fatal shooting stemmed from an argument that took place in front of one of the apartments. Following the altercation, the shooter fled the scene in a white SUV. While authorities were later able to locate the vehicle, the individual responsible for Mejia's death remained at large. As of late September 2020, no arrests had been made in connection with the homicide, and a detailed description of the suspect had not been released to the public. The specifics of what led to the deadly argument remained unclear in the immediate aftermath of the investigation.
