Kevin Alexander, 38, a Black man, was shot on the night of December 11, 2017, at his apartment complex in the 4600 block of Vegas Valley Drive near Nellis Boulevard in southeast Las Vegas. Police said a man who appeared to be wearing body armor fired into Alexander’s unit from outside. In the chaos that followed, Alexander tried to escape by jumping from an exterior stairway; the gunman shot him twice as he fled.
He was taken to a hospital, where he died of his wounds; the coroner ruled the death a homicide.
Detectives described the assailant as a Black male, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and about 140 pounds, and noted he was wearing body armor during the attack. A police lieutenant at the scene said investigators believed the shooting might be narcotics related. In the immediate aftermath, police reported that the shooter had not been found, and subsequent early coverage did not announce an arrest tied to the case.
