Alton “Chucky” Bullard Jr., 32, a Black male, was gunned down just after noon on September 11, 2015, outside the Bargain Smokes shop in an east Las Vegas strip mall along the 5500 block of Boulder Highway near East Tropicana Avenue. He had been standing with Aaron Anderson, 25, and a third man when another man approached, exchanged words, left briefly, then returned and opened fire.
Anderson died at the scene; Bullard was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Witnesses described the gunman fleeing on foot toward Tropicana as officers converged on a parking lot strewn with shell casings and stunned bystanders.
In the days that followed, police released surveillance images and canvassed the Boulder Crossing Shopping Center, while Bullard's family grieved publicly. His 10-year-old daughter remembered him as a caretaker who “helped other people out,” a portrait that contrasted sharply with the sudden, daylight shooting that cut through the bustle of a busy shopping plaza. Coroner's officials formally identified both victims and ruled their deaths homicides by gunshot.
Nearly a year later, detectives named a suspect: 32-year-old James Rachal. He was taken into custody in California on unrelated matters and then booked in Clark County on two counts of murder with a deadly weapon and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the smoke-shop ambush. Investigators said Rachal had entered the store moments before the shooting, then stepped back out, exchanged words, and fired multiple rounds before fleeing. Police said the motive was unknown; public records and news reports did not indicate a court outcome at the time of his arrest.
