In North Las Vegas, what began as an argument between two longtime family friends ended in the tragic death of 31-year-old DeAndre Harris, a Black male, on October 24, 2020. That day, Harris was involved in a dispute with Kelvis Bryant, 37, outside a home on Whelk Place. The verbal altercation escalated, leading Bryant to fire a single shot from inside his SUV, striking Harris.
After being shot, Harris was rushed to University Medical Center, but he ultimately succumbed to a perforating
gunshot wound to the abdomen. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner's office. The motive for the fatal confrontation was described by Harris's mother as a "longtime feud" between her son and Bryant, who was the son of her friend.
Later that same day, just before midnight, Kelvis Bryant was arrested. Following the shooting, Bryant had reached out to his girlfriend and cousin, expressing his desire to turn himself in to the authorities. When police located him, he was reportedly emotional and cooperative. He led investigators to the location where he had hidden the pistol used in the shooting. While in custody, Bryant expressed remorse, stating that the incident happened quickly and that their frequent arguments had never before turned violent. He was subsequently charged with open murder with a deadly weapon and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
