The life of Dre'Vaughn Dixion, a 22-year-old Black / African American man from North Las Vegas, was cut short on the night of Sunday, February 16, 2020. That evening, Dixion met two other men in a residential area near Carey Avenue and Civic Center Drive to purchase marijuana. The meeting took a fatal turn, ending in a shooting that would be investigated as a homicide.
According to the North Las Vegas Police Department, detectives believe that during the transaction, Dixion stole the
marijuana from the two men, later identified as 18-year-old Rodrigo Chavez and 19-year-old Blake Whittington. Police stated that Chavez and Whittington then chased Dixion. In the course of the pursuit, Dixion was shot. The Clark County coroner’s office later ruled his death a homicide resulting from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Around 11:00 p.m. that night, an unidentified man drove the wounded Dixion to North Vista Hospital. Officers who happened to be at the hospital for an unrelated call were present when they arrived. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Dixion was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The North Las Vegas Police Department launched an investigation and soon identified Chavez and Whittington as the suspects in the shooting. Detectives located and apprehended Rodrigo Chavez in North Las Vegas, while Blake Whittington was found and arrested in Henderson. Both men were booked into the Las Vegas City Jail.
Chavez and Whittington faced charges of murder with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder. Dixion’s death was the third homicide to occur in North Las Vegas in 2020. As of February 2020, both suspects had been arrested and charged in connection with his death.
