On a Halloween night in North Las Vegas, the life of 17-year-old Black male SeMauri Norris-Johnson was tragically cut short. On October 31, 2023, at approximately 9:45 PM, Norris-Johnson, a promising football player at Desert Pines High School, was fatally shot near the intersection of Shadow Oak and Spotted Pony drives. He was with a group of other teenagers in ski masks who had just exited a vehicle and were approaching two younger teens who were out trick-or-treating.
According to the family's account of the events, Norris-Johnson had intended to playfully snatch candy bags from the trick-or-treaters. In a sudden turn of events, one of the trick-or-treaters, a 16-year-old, brandished a firearm and fired, striking Norris-Johnson. A neighbor's surveillance camera captured the swiftness of the incident, showing Norris-Johnson getting out of a car just moments before the sound of gunfire. He died at the scene.
The aftermath of the shooting left a community in mourning and a family searching for justice. Norris-Johnson was remembered as a "light" by his coaches and was a beloved student-athlete with a bright future, possibly at a Division I college. Hundreds gathered for a balloon release in his memory, and his football team has dedicated their subsequent season to him. The investigation into his death led to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect nearly three months later, on January 26, 2024. Due to the suspect's age, his identity has not been publicly released. The teenager was taken to the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center and faced charges including illegal possession of a firearm and firing into an occupied vehicle, but not murder.
The lack of a murder charge and the confidentiality surrounding the juvenile suspect's case have been a source of immense frustration for Norris-Johnson's family. They have expressed their struggle to get information from law enforcement and have called upon the Clark County District Attorney to launch a new investigation into the death. The family contends that the investigation has been mishandled and that they have been denied the answers they deserve. While the North Las Vegas Police Department maintains that the investigation is still open and active, the family's quest for what they see as true justice for SeMauri continues. They have also indicated their intent to file a civil lawsuit.
