On October 17, 2019, 28-year-old Corey Donte Jones was fatally shot in North Las Vegas, Nevada. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of West Alexander Road and Revere Street. Jones was a passenger in a Nissan sedan when multiple gunshots struck the vehicle, hitting him in the chest. The driver, uninjured, immediately drove to a nearby Walmart parking lot and called 911. Jones was transported to University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries that afternoon.
Investigations revealed that the shooting stemmed from a botched drug deal. Jones and his associates had met the suspects at a 7-Eleven on West Craig Road, where they purchased an ounce of marijuana for $200, using counterfeit bills. Upon realizing the deceit, the suspects pursued Jones's vehicle south on Revere Street, opening fire at the Nissan near the intersection with Alexander Road.
In the following months, North Las Vegas police arrested three individuals in connection with Jones's death. On November 7, 2019, 21-year-old Michael Jerome Anderson Jr. was apprehended and charged with open murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. During police interviews, Anderson initially provided conflicting accounts but eventually implicated his accomplice, 21-year-old Ivan Jay Andrews Jr., a purported gang member. Andrews was arrested on November 25, 2019, facing similar charges.
A third suspect, 31-year-old Stanley Thomas, was arrested on December 28, 2019. Thomas faced charges of murder and possession of a gun by a prohibited person. He was held on more than $1 million bail and was scheduled to appear in court on December 31, 2019.
The arrests of Anderson, Andrews, and Thomas brought some resolution to the case, highlighting the dangers associated with illicit drug transactions and the use of counterfeit currency. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement in apprehending the suspects underscored the commitment to addressing violent crimes in the North Las Vegas community.
