On the night of May 1, 2021, a young Black/African American man named Khyler Rashaan Johnson, 19, was fatally shot in North Las Vegas, Nevada. The incident began to unfold around 10:40 p.m. when police received reports of a shooting at an apartment complex on the 4200 block of Commerce Street. Soon after, more calls came in about gunfire being exchanged between two vehicles near Commerce Street and Craig Road.
Responding officers discovered a vehicle that had crashed into a median on the
100 block of Craig Road. Inside, they found Johnson, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Clark County coroner's office later confirmed his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the lower back and ruled it a homicide.
The investigation into Johnson's death revealed a history of conflict with the alleged shooter. According to arresting documents, Johnson was driving with his cousin on the night of the incident. His family informed police that he had been in a physical altercation with a man named Khalil Young within a month of the shooting and had been receiving threatening text messages from him.
Young's girlfriend told detectives that she had met with both Young and Johnson on the night of the shooting. She stated that as she and Johnson were outside her apartment, they saw Young driving towards them. Johnson and his cousin got back into their car, and she witnessed Young pursuing them, followed by the sound of numerous gunshots. Young later allegedly told her that one of the men in the other car had shot at him, so he shot back. She also led police to Young's abandoned car, which had bullet holes in the hood and matched the description of the vehicle involved in the shooting.
On June 5, 2021, North Las Vegas police arrested 21-year-old Khalil Young, who is also identified in court records as Khalil Young-Bernard, in connection with Johnson's murder. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and faced charges of murder with a deadly weapon and two firearm charges. He was held without bail pending a preliminary hearing.
