Sidney McKnight, a 25-year-old Black man, was found "passed out" in the road on the 5600 block of Indian Springs, near West Ann Road and Clayton Street, according to a 911 caller. When North Las Vegas Police officers arrived around 5 a.m., they initially thought the man might be intoxicated.
However, a closer look revealed a much more grim reality: McKnight was bleeding from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Clark County coroner's office would later confirm that Sidney De'Trae McKnight, a resident of North Las Vegas, died from a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. Homicide detectives were tasked with unraveling the mystery of his death, determining that he lived in the area. In the days that followed, police actively searched for witnesses and attempted to backtrack the events leading up to the fatal shooting, but no immediate suspects were identified. Sidney, born on September 28, 1994, in Las Vegas, was remembered as a sweet, gentle, quiet, and strong individual who largely kept to himself. A graduate of Foothills High School in 2012, he had attended the College of Southern Nevada with the goal of becoming a mechanic. He had worked in the restaurant and entertainment industries before taking a position as a warehouse associate at Amazon. Described as a "joy to be around" by his family, Sidney enjoyed spending his time with loved ones, watching funny YouTube videos, playing video games, and going to the gym. His obituary tragically noted that he "departed this life by force" and was the "victim of a heinous crime."
As time passed, the quest for justice for Sidney McKnight continued with no apparent progress. A year after his death, his case remained unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified by the North Las Vegas Police Department. The lack of information left his family and friends grappling with the unanswered questions surrounding his violent death.
