In the early evening of February 6, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm near East Webb Avenue and Davis Place in North Las Vegas. When the chaos subsided, three individuals were left wounded. Among them was 17-year-old Mekhi Clark, a Black / African American male. First responders rushed all three victims to University Medical Center, but Mekhi's injuries, multiple gunshot wounds, proved to be fatal, and he died a few hours later.
His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner's office. The other two victims, initially believed to be in their late 20s or early 30s, faced their own battles for survival, with one being released from the hospital while the other remained in critical condition.
North Las Vegas Police Department investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. According to their preliminary findings, two men had approached a group of people and opened fire for reasons that were not immediately clear. The investigation into the senseless violence that claimed the teenager's life was launched, with detectives actively pursuing all available leads.
The search for those responsible led to a breakthrough in the following weeks. On March 16, 2021, authorities arrested 24-year-old Dean Coleman in connection with the fatal shooting. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Coleman and another man parking outside an apartment before running toward a group and firing their weapons. An arrest report indicated that the shooting was gang-related, identifying Coleman as a known member of the Piru Blood and HTO gangs.
The investigation didn't end with Coleman's apprehension. A week later, on March 23, a second suspect, 28-year-old John Caver, was taken into custody. Caver faced a string of serious charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of attempted murder, and battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm. While the specifics of Caver's involvement were not immediately detailed, his arrest marked another significant step in the ongoing quest for justice for Mekhi Clark and the other victims of the violent encounter.
