On the evening of March 17, 2021, a heated argument shattered the quiet of an apartment in Las Vegas. Gerardo Romero, a 28-year-old Hispanic man, was embroiled in a dispute with his own uncle, Ruben Tavarez. The source of their conflict was a gold ring that Tavarez believed to be fake. This argument, which took place in an apartment on the 2100 block of Houston Drive, near Eastern Avenue and Charleston Boulevard, would ultimately cost Romero his life.
As the disagreement escalated,
Tavarez, who was 42 at the time, allegedly produced a gun and shot his nephew in the head. Witnesses, including Romero's mother, heard the argument and the fatal gunshot that followed. Police were called to the scene around 9:35 p.m. and discovered Romero deceased. The Clark County Coroner's Office later confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound to the head and officially ruled his death a homicide. Romero's mother also informed authorities that Tavarez had been using methamphetamine and had a history of violent altercations with her son.
In the wake of the shooting, Ruben Tavarez fled the scene, prompting the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to issue a warrant for his arrest. The search for Tavarez concluded on April 1, 2021, when he was taken into custody on suspicion of open murder. At the time of his arrest, authorities found methamphetamine in his possession. He was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he was held without bail to await court proceedings.
