On the evening of June 23, 2021, the life of 18-year-old Shania James, a Black female, was tragically cut short in a northwest Las Vegas residence. Responding to a 10 p.m. report of a shooting on Jaquita Avenue, police discovered a chaotic scene. Inside the home, they found Shania, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to her head and back and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her death was subsequently ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner's office.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a tragic and complex personal conflict. Detectives believe the violence erupted from a "love triangle" involving Shania, a man she was dating, and his ex-wife. At the time of the incident, another woman was found to have jumped from a balcony to escape the unfolding events. This woman was later identified as 28-year-old Shamiya Todd. Along with the man, who was in his early 40s, Todd was initially detained by police for questioning. Three young children were also found unharmed inside the residence and were taken into the care of Child Protective Services.
Following their investigation, detectives arrested Shamiya Todd, the ex-wife of the man Shania was dating. Todd was charged with one count of open murder and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. At the time of her death, Shania's family revealed that she was pregnant. She had recently celebrated her 18th birthday in May and had aspirations of following in her father's footsteps by joining the Army. Family members described her as a smart, happy, and kind individual who knew what she wanted in life.
