In the late evening hours of August 2, 2021, a series of events unfolded at a Las Vegas park that culminated in the tragic death of 30-year-old James Edgar May. Witnesses at Charlie Frias Park reported observing May acting erratically and challenging people to fights. This behavior soon escalated into a physical altercation with another man.
The confrontation between James May and the other individual led to both of them falling to the ground.
It was at this moment that the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the park. May sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his neck and chest. First responders arrived at the scene and transported him to University Medical Center, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The assailant fled the scene immediately after the shooting, disappearing into the night.
During their investigation of the crime scene, detectives made a crucial discovery: a cellphone that had been left behind. Analysis of this phone provided the critical lead they needed, pointing them toward a suspect. This evidence led investigators to 27-year-old Hugo Gonzalez. On August 6, 2021, just four days after the shooting, Gonzalez was located and taken into custody.
Upon his arrest, authorities noted that Gonzalez had multiple scratches and abrasions, injuries consistent with his involvement in a physical struggle. Further solidifying the case against him, Gonzalez was also found in possession of a receipt for a recently purchased cellphone, suggesting he had attempted to replace the one he had left at the park. Following his arrest, Gonzalez was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon. He declined to provide a statement to the police regarding the incident.
