Roy Gaines had flown to Las Vegas from his home in Northern California after his son, Justin Gaines, expressed distress over a pending eviction. He arrived with the intention of helping his son navigate the difficult situation. However, communication from both Roy and Justin abruptly ceased on the afternoon of December 14, raising alarm bells for the family back in California. This sudden silence compelled Roy's wife and other son to travel to Las Vegas to investigate the unsettling lack of contact.
Upon their arrival at the home on Sagelyn Street on December 15, they made a grim discovery. Roy Gaines was found dead inside the residence. The Clark County coroner's office would later determine that he had died from a gunshot wound to the back.
