On a Friday afternoon in Las Vegas, on December 2, 2016, the life of 13-year-old Fabriccio Patti was cut tragically short. Fabriccio, a male student at Lawrence Junior High School, along with two friends, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, had devised a plan to steal from a local business. The three boys, after planning the theft at a nearby fast-food restaurant, entered the Lucky Cigar and Smokes shop with their hoods pulled over their faces, though they were not wearing masks and were
unarmed.
Inside the store, one of the teenagers held the door open while Fabriccio and the other boy ran towards the counter with the intention of grabbing a marijuana water pipe. The store clerk, 24-year-old Raad Sunna, was behind the cash register. Believing he was about to be robbed or even killed, Sunna drew a handgun and opened fire. While the two other boys were not hit and managed to flee the scene, Fabriccio was struck multiple times. An autopsy would later reveal that he had been shot seven times, with all the bullet wounds located on the back of his body, including one to his head.
In the immediate aftermath, a hysterical and crying Raad Sunna called the police. Initially, law enforcement considered that Sunna might have acted in self-defense. However, after reviewing the store's surveillance footage, which showed that the teenagers never came close to or threatened Sunna, investigators determined that his life was not in danger. The video reportedly showed Fabriccio and the other teen stopping to grab items, at which point Sunna began firing. This led to Sunna's arrest on a charge of murder. The two other teenagers who had accompanied Fabriccio were taken into custody at a nearby fast-food restaurant and faced juvenile criminal charges related to the theft.
