In the early hours of July 5, 2017, the life of 30-year-old Black/African American male Marquian Hearring was cut short in a hail of gunfire at a Las Vegas apartment complex. The events leading to his death began unfolding during Fourth of July celebrations at the complex located on the 4300 block of North Lamont Street. Hearring had reportedly been drinking throughout the day and was involved in several confrontations.
Reports from witnesses indicated that he had been brandishing a gun and making threats to others in the complex. Police had even been called to the location earlier in the evening regarding a man with a gun, believed to be Hearring, but were unable to locate him.
The fatal encounter began when Hearring approached the apartment of 29-year-old Keon Miller. An argument ensued, and Hearring allegedly threatened Miller and his family while waving a firearm. Miller, who was also armed, retrieved his rifle. According to police reports, after Hearring walked away from Miller's apartment, Miller followed him through the complex and opened fire. Hearring was struck by multiple gunshots and died at the University Medical Center. A bystander was also struck by a stray bullet but survived their injuries.
Keon Miller was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Hearring's death. Miller claimed he was acting in self-defense, a claim that was disputed by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Investigators stated that since Hearring was walking away, Miller was not in imminent danger and should have contacted the police instead of pursuing him. Witness statements suggested that Miller fired the first shots from a distance. Police found Hearring's gun in a dumpster at the scene. The Clark County coroner's office officially ruled Hearring's death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
