Jahmal Rayshaun Rogers, a 39-year-old Black / African American man, died on December 19, 2021, in Las Vegas, Nevada, following a domestic dispute that ended in gunfire. The incident occurred on a Sunday evening at approximately 10:05 p.m. in an apartment located in the 900 block of Twain Avenue, near Maryland Parkway. Responding to a call about a shooting, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers discovered Rogers inside the apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the arrival of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Rogers had been in an argument with his girlfriend, 37-year-old Shanika Smith. According to police, the argument escalated, leading to Smith pointing a gun at Rogers and shooting him. Two children were present in the apartment at the time of the fatal shooting. Smith was taken into custody by police and later booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
During the investigation, Smith provided conflicting accounts of the events that transpired. She claimed that she and Rogers had been "playing" with a shotgun prior to the shooting. According to her arrest report, she gave three different stories about how he was supposedly shot by accident. Despite her claims, authorities proceeded to charge her with open murder with a deadly weapon and felony child abuse/neglect with a deadly weapon.
