In the fall of 2022, a 33-year-old Caucasian woman named Georgia Ann Sherman was tragically killed in her Las Vegas, Nevada, apartment. On October 17, 2022, Sherman was found fatally shot, beginning a multi-state saga of violence and a desperate manhunt for the man police believed was responsible for her death.
At the time of her murder, Georgia Sherman had opened her home to a man named Hunter Allen McGuire, a 26-year-old from Kingman, Arizona.
Unbeknownst to Sherman, McGuire was already a suspect in a double homicide that had occurred in Kingman earlier that year, in June. Her sister later stated that they were good friends and she never imagined he would bring her any harm. They were unaware of his status as a wanted man.
Following the discovery of Sherman's body, law enforcement quickly identified McGuire as the primary suspect in her shooting. This triggered a widespread manhunt for McGuire, who had fled Las Vegas. The search for him intensified as he was linked to yet another killing. On October 19, just two days after Sherman's death, McGuire was named the suspect in the shooting death of 35-year-old Martin Nelson Jr. in Golden Valley, Arizona.
The frantic search for McGuire came to a dramatic and violent end on October 21, 2022. Authorities located him traveling in a vehicle with his 32-year-old girlfriend, Samantha Branek, and another woman, 23-year-old Brittany Conkling, near Interstate 40 in Yucca, Arizona. A high-speed chase covering approximately 35 miles ensued. After the vehicle veered off the road, the trio fled into the desert. Conkling eventually surrendered to law enforcement.
Sometime after the chase, both Hunter McGuire and Samantha Branek were found dead from gunshot wounds to the head. They were discovered lying next to each other with a rifle on McGuire's chest. Investigators believe McGuire died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though it remains unclear if he also shot Branek or if she took her own life. Due to his death, Hunter McGuire was never formally arrested or tried for the murder of Georgia Ann Sherman. Brittany Conkling, the surviving woman, was arrested and charged with hindering prosecution.
