In the early hours of October 27, 2022, the life of a 46-year-old Black / African American woman, Yetundi Yvonne Negitra Maples, was tragically cut short in her Las Vegas home. Residing at 5806 Spectacular Bid Street, Maples was shot and killed, leaving behind a community in shock and a family devastated. The harrowing events of that night were witnessed in part by her courageous 6-year-old son, who would play a pivotal role in the immediate aftermath.
According to police reports, the
boy heard a gunshot and discovered his mother with a gunshot wound to her head. In a chilling exchange captured by a neighbor's observations, the young boy confronted his mother's boyfriend, Ishmil Deon Swafford, stating, "You hurt my mom.". Swafford, 43, is said to have callously replied, "Your mom will be fine," before fleeing the scene on his motorcycle. Barefoot and shirtless, the brave child then crossed the street to a neighbor's house and declared, "My mom just got killed," prompting a 911 call that brought law enforcement to the scene.
Upon their arrival at approximately 1:20 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department found Maples deceased inside her home. Investigators discovered a. 45 caliber cartridge casing just outside the bedroom and four additional cartridges near her body. The investigation quickly focused on Swafford, who lived with Maples and her son. It was revealed that friends and family had previously urged Maples to end her relationship with Swafford due to a history of physical abuse.
The day after the fatal shooting, on October 28, Ishmil Deon Swafford was arrested and charged with open murder with a deadly weapon. He was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he was held without bail. In the wake of this tragedy, Maples' daughter initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, expressing immense gratitude for her younger brother's bravery and acknowledging the long and difficult road to healing that lay ahead for their family.
