On the evening of May 17, 1986, a wave of violence swept through a Colorado Springs shopping center, leaving a trail of devastation and ending the life of 29-year-old Debbie Green, a female, along with four others. The horrific events began to unfold at the Grand View Lounge, a local bar where patrons were unwinding, unaware of the tragedy that was about to strike.
A gunman, later identified as Gilbert Eugenio Archibeque, entered the establishment and opened fire, fatally wounding Green, 45-year-old Joanne McNamara, and 52-year-old James Roepke.
The rampage did not end there. After the shootings at the lounge, Archibeque moved next door to the Kwik-Way convenience store. Inside, he continued his deadly assault, killing 22-year-old Sandra Howard and 19-year-old Elaine Sindeldecker. The motive for the attacks was determined to be robbery. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Archibeque set the Grand View Lounge ablaze before fleeing the scene, leaving a community in shock and mourning.
The investigation into the brutal slayings quickly pointed towards Archibeque, a 29-year-old plumber who was reportedly identified from photographs. Law enforcement officers tracked him to his apartment. As police surrounded the building and prepared to make an arrest, Archibeque took his own life, bringing a sudden and grim conclusion to the manhunt the following day. His suicide closed the case, but the memory of the five innocent lives lost in the violent spree continues to cast a long shadow over the city of Colorado Springs.
