In the early morning hours of October 19, 2017, a night of socializing among a group of acquaintances in Fort Collins, Colorado, ended in a tragic eruption of violence. Tristian Kemp, a 26-year-old male from Destin, Florida, was fatally shot in an apartment complex near the Colorado State University campus. The celebratory atmosphere of the evening, which included marking the birthday of another victim, Savannah McNealy, took a dark and unforeseen turn.
The group had been together prior
to the shooting, and the violence seemed to have erupted after they had returned to the Sunstone apartment complex on City Park Avenue. It was there that Michael Zamora, a 30-year-old active-duty Air Force staff sergeant, opened fire. Kemp and McNealy, who was a 22-year-old student at Colorado State University, were both killed by multiple gunshot wounds. A third individual in their group was also shot but survived her injuries.
The investigation into the deadly encounter revealed a grim conclusion. After shooting Kemp and McNealy, the gunman, Michael Zamora, turned the gun on himself, dying by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident was determined to be a murder-suicide, and as the perpetrator was deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Tristian Kemp and Savannah McNealy. Authorities recovered two rifles and a handgun at the scene that belonged to Zamora. While the events leading up to the shooting were pieced together, a definitive motive for the violent outburst was not publicly released.
