In the early evening of April 5, 2025, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace outside the Foothills Mall in Fort Collins, Colorado, leaving two brothers dead. One of the victims was Ivan Arreguin Grimaldo, a 37-year-old male from Greeley. His younger brother, 27-year-old Luis Angel Arreguin of Westminster, was also killed in the incident which authorities have suggested may be gang-related.
Responding to a shots-fired call at approximately 5 p.m., Fort Collins police officers discovered
the two men on a sidewalk between the mall's parking lot and one of the buildings. Both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were rushed to a local hospital, but their injuries proved fatal. The Larimer County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death for both brothers as homicide. The incident prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order for those in the immediate vicinity of the shopping center as law enforcement secured the scene.
The day after the shooting, police took a juvenile into custody. The suspect was later identified as 16-year-old Bryan Gallegos. Investigators announced that Gallegos would be charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Additional charges included unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. Gallegos was taken into custody and held on a $2 million cash bond.
In the wake of the tragedy, the victims' sister, Cassandra Grimaldo, spoke of her profound loss, describing a close-knit relationship with her two older brothers. She expressed her heartbreak and disbelief over their violent deaths, noting that they had been out shopping for shoes just before the attack. A fundraising page was established to help their mother, Cirila Grimaldo, with the unexpected funeral expenses for both of her sons.
