In the autumn of 1981, a shadow fell over Fort Collins, Colorado, with the tragic death of James Raymond Balderson, a 24-year-old White male. On October 16th, Balderson was working as a convenience store clerk when his life was violently cut short. His death was not an isolated incident but part of a chilling crime spree that instilled fear across multiple states.
The man responsible for this heinous act was Marion Albert Pruett, a serial killer whose brutality knew no bounds.
Pruett, who was in the Federal Witness Protection Program under the alias 'Charles 'Sonny' Pearson,' had embarked on a violent journey that left a trail of victims in his wake. On the same day he murdered Balderson, Pruett also killed another convenience store clerk, Anthony Taitt, in the nearby city of Loveland. His method was consistent and cruel, often targeting those in vulnerable positions. Before his deadly arrival in Colorado, Pruett had already committed other murders, including that of a convenience store clerk in Arkansas and the kidnapping and murder of a woman during a bank robbery in Mississippi.
The extensive investigation into this string of brutal killings eventually led to Pruett's capture. He was tried and convicted for the murders of James R. Balderson, Anthony Taitt, and his other victims. For his crimes in Colorado, Pruett received two life sentences. He was also sentenced to death for murders committed in other states. Justice was ultimately served when Marion Albert Pruett was executed by lethal injection on April 12, 1999, closing a dark chapter for the families of his victims and the communities he had terrorized.
