Justin Tyler Sawyer, a 20-year-old male, vanished on December 17, 2020, a day that began with unsettling mystery and concluded in a tragedy that would take months to fully uncover. His last known location was a Shell gas station in Oak Grove, Kentucky, a detail that would become a crucial piece in the complex investigation that followed. Concern grew quickly when Sawyer, a graduate of Rossview High School, failed to return home, prompting a widespread search effort.
As days turned into
weeks, the hope of finding Sawyer alive began to fade, and investigators from both the Clarksville Police Department and the Kentucky State Police started to suspect foul play. Their collaborative efforts soon led them to three individuals who would be at the center of the case. In early January 2021, authorities announced the arrests of Dawuan Davis, 20, Gene “Doug” Henry, 36, and Marquell Devont'e Sims, 22. The charges against them painted a grim picture of Sawyer's final moments, alleging robbery, kidnapping, and assault.
The narrative that emerged from the investigation was a chilling account of a robbery gone horrifically wrong. It is believed that Davis and Sims entered Sawyer's vehicle with the intent to rob him. During the course of the robbery, Davis allegedly shot Sawyer. Later, it is alleged that Henry was enlisted to help move Sawyer’s body. The investigation stretched across state lines, with Sawyer's car eventually being discovered in Georgia.
For 76 days, Sawyer’s family and friends waited in anguish. Their worst fears were realized on March 2, 2021, when his remains were discovered in a wooded area in Clarksville. The discovery brought a devastating end to the search but also a renewed push for justice. Dawaun Davis was identified as the alleged gunman and ultimately faced charges of first-degree murder, especially aggravated kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse. Marquell Sims and Gene Henry faced charges related to their involvement in the crime, with both later accepting plea deals for lesser charges.
