The incident began at a stoplight on West Evans Avenue, where Martinez and a passenger in his car had a verbal exchange with a man on the sidewalk. As Martinez drove away, the man, identified as 39-year-old Patrick Browne, threw a drink into the car, striking the passenger. Martinez pulled over, and both he and his passenger got out to confront Browne.
The situation escalated dramatically when Browne brandished a sword with a two- to three-foot blade that he had concealed in a suitcase, threatening to stab both men. While the passenger returned to the car, Martinez remained outside. Browne then approached the driver's side of the vehicle and stabbed Martinez in the stomach. Despite being gravely wounded, Martinez managed to get back into the car and start driving away before losing consciousness. His passenger stopped the car and sought help, but Martinez was pronounced dead at the hospital.
