In the cold of a Denver winter, on January 29, 2022, the life of 23-year-old Elijah Kelly was tragically cut short. That evening, gunshots echoed in the vicinity of East Colfax Avenue and North Ogden Street. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two young men suffering from gunshot wounds. Elijah Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim, 19-year-old Kanajai Burton, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The
investigation into the double homicide led Denver police to a suspect little more than a week later. On February 8, 2022, authorities arrested 18-year-old A'darion Sanford in connection with the fatal shootings of Kelly and Burton. Initially, Sanford was booked on two counts of first-degree murder.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of resolution, though not without the complexities of the justice system. A'darion Sanford ultimately accepted a plea deal, resulting in a conviction on two counts of second-degree murder. On August 16, 2023, a judge sentenced him to 60 years in prison, with 30 years to be served for each life lost. While the case concluded with a conviction and sentencing, the violent act that ended the lives of Elijah Kelly and Kanajai Burton left a lasting impact on their families and the Denver community.
