Who killed Jeremiah Thomas? On the night of August 1, 1997, 15-year-old Jeremiah James Thomas, a white male, was waiting at a bus stop near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver. It was approximately 11:20 p.m. when a small red car with several young people inside passed by. A verbal exchange began between the occupants of the car and Jeremiah.
The occupants of the vehicle reportedly flashed gang signs, and a witness stated that Jeremiah gestured back.
Following this exchange, the driver of the red car made a U-turn, drove up onto the sidewalk, and deliberately struck Jeremiah. He was then dragged under the car for several hundred feet as the vehicle sped away. Jeremiah Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident was briefly covered by local newspapers at the time. However, the vehicle and the individuals responsible for Jeremiah's death have never been identified, and the case remains an unsolved homicide. The Denver Police Department continues to seek information from the public regarding this cold case.
