In the early hours of March 1, 2014, the life of 23-year-old Dontai Rashad Carter was tragically cut short in a condominium in Denver's Montbello neighborhood. Denver police responded to a distress call at a residence on Memphis Street to find Dontai and another man, 31-year-old Richard E. Sims, both deceased from gunshot wounds to the head. Dontai, who was born on June 10, 1990, was remembered by friends and family for his vibrant personality.
The investigation into the double homicide
led detectives to identify a 2001 Chevy Tahoe as a vehicle of interest that was possibly taken from the crime scene. Later that same day, authorities located the vehicle in the nearby city of Aurora. When police approached the SUV, several individuals fled on foot. Two people were quickly apprehended, and a third, a juvenile with outstanding warrants, was also detained. Despite these apprehensions, their connection to the double murder was not confirmed, and no charges related to the homicides were filed at that time. The case grew cold, joining a significant number of unsolved homicides in Denver.
Another young man named Dontai Carter, aged 20, also met a violent end in Denver. He was shot and killed on December 22, 2010. His death occurred during a period of increased gun violence in the city, and he was one of many young victims.
The investigation into this Dontai Carter's death was conducted by the Denver Police Department. However, no suspects were ever publicly identified or arrested in connection with his murder. Much like the later case of Dontai Rashad Carter, this investigation also went cold. Law enforcement has periodically sought information from the public, hoping a new lead might emerge to provide a breakthrough and bring a sense of closure to his family and friends.
