A woman is found strangled to death inside of her apartment. In the spring of 1989, concern grew for 28-year-old Mary Showman, a white female, when she uncharacteristically failed to show up for her job in Denver, Colorado. On May 12th, her worried coworkers went to her apartment located near Mississippi Avenue and South Parker Road to check on her. Tragically, their concerns were realized when they discovered her body inside.
An investigation revealed that Mary had been strangled to death and had likely been deceased for several days before she
was found. Adding to the mystery, her vehicle was not in its usual spot at the apartment complex. It was later located abandoned several blocks away from her home, suggesting a possible attempt by her killer to mislead investigators or delay the discovery of the crime.
At the time of her death, Mary was pursuing an associate's degree in accounting, having previously worked as a server in ski resort towns before moving back to Denver. Her murder sent shockwaves through her community, leaving friends and family to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a reliable and ambitious young woman. Despite the passage of time, her case remains unsolved. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with her murder. The Denver Police Department continues to classify her death as a cold case, holding out hope that new information will one day lead to a breakthrough and bring justice for Mary.
