In the winter of 2017, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded in the parking lot of a Colorado Springs Kmart. Cory William Forbush, a 23-year-old male, died on December 27, 2017, from a gunshot wound. Originally from San Bernardino, California, he had moved to Colorado Springs in 2004 and was working as a glass glazier.
Those who knew him remembered a happy person who was devoted to his two children, Mikey and Lilly, and was always ready to lend a hand to friends in need.
The tragic events leading to his death began when Cory and his brother pulled their vehicle into the Kmart parking lot. Shortly after, another vehicle pulled up beside them. According to an arrest affidavit, an altercation occurred, and Cory allegedly exited his vehicle holding a gun. It was at this point that he was shot by an individual in the other car. The incident shattered the evening's calm and left a family grieving an immeasurable loss.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect. Michael Parkhurst II, who was 23 at the time, was arrested by El Paso County sheriff's deputies without incident on January 5, 2018. He was taken into custody in an unincorporated area south of Colorado Springs. Parkhurst was accused of killing Cory William Forbush in the fatal confrontation that transpired in the busy retail parking lot just days after Christmas.
