On a late summer evening in Colorado Springs, the life of 30-year-old Terrell Cortez Madrid Duran was cut short. On August 27, 2018, while riding his motorcycle, Duran was fatally shot in the 1300 block of East Las Animas Street. First responders arrived at the scene around 8:45 p.m. to find that Duran had been struck by gunfire. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention but succumbed to his injuries.
His death was officially ruled as the 20th homicide in the city for that year.
The investigation into the shooting led Colorado Springs police to identify several suspects. Their efforts resulted in the arrest of two teenagers, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, who were taken into custody and faced first-degree murder charges. Due to their status as juveniles, their identities were not publicly released. The investigation did not stop there, as another individual, 18-year-old Santino Brown, was also identified as a suspect in connection with Duran's death.
Following his arrest, Santino Brown was charged for his role in the fatal shooting. The legal proceedings against him culminated in a guilty verdict. On May 23, 2019, Brown was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison, bringing a chapter of the investigation to a close and holding one of the individuals involved accountable for the death of Terrell Cortez Madrid Duran. While the specific motive behind the shooting was not widely reported, the conclusion of Brown's trial provided a measure of resolution for the violent end to a man's life on the streets of Colorado Springs.
