In the early morning hours of November 28, 2020, a shooting at a residence in the 11000 block of Hanging Valley Way in Colorado Springs resulted in the deaths of two young men. The victims were identified as 22-year-old Francis J. McKinnis, III, a male resident of Colorado Springs, and 18-year-old Wolfgang Massie. Officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a call at approximately 1:27 a.m.
and discovered the two deceased individuals inside the home.
Detectives from the Homicide/Assault Unit immediately began an investigation into the deaths, which were being treated as homicides. An autopsy was completed on November 30, 2020, by the El Paso County Coroner's Office, though the official cause and manner of death were pending further investigation. The deaths of McKinnis and Massie marked the 36th and 37th homicide investigations in the city of Colorado Springs for that year.
Francis, known to friends and family as Tres, was remembered as a man with a captivating personality, a creative spirit, and a heart full of compassion and fierce loyalty. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1, 1998, he grew up in various states as a military dependent but always considered Hawaii his home. His family described his smile as exuding love and acceptance and noted his unique quirks and humor would be deeply missed. As of late 2020, the police investigation into the double homicide was active and ongoing, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of any suspect or suspects.
