On the evening of October 1, 2020, a burst of gunfire in the 300 block of University Drive in Colorado Springs shattered the night and tragically cut short the life of 38-year-old Jerome Nelson. When Colorado Springs Police Department officers responded to the shots fired call at approximately 7:17 P.M., they discovered two men with apparent gunshot wounds.
Both men were rushed to a local hospital, but for Jerome Nelson, a Colorado Springs resident, the injuries proved fatal.
The second man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released. The El Paso County Coroner's Office later completed an autopsy and his death was officially investigated as a homicide. This marked the 27th homicide investigation in the city of Colorado Springs for 2020.
In the immediate aftermath, family and friends of Nelson were left searching for answers. The mother of one of his children described him as a loving and funny father who could light up a room and make everyone laugh. His loved ones made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward, expressing their deep sense of loss and the pain of having to inform his children that their father was gone.
Despite the ongoing investigation by the CSPD's Homicide/Assault Unit, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the death of Jerome Nelson. The case is now considered a cold case, and the investigation remains open. The Colorado Springs Police Department continues to ask for anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact them or to remain anonymous by calling the Crime Stoppers Tip Line.
