In the line of duty, 33-year-old Hugh Allan Martin, a White / Caucasian male, lost his life on the evening of April 13, 1992, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A deputy with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, Martin was leading a SWAT team during a high-risk, no-knock drug search at a residence on Western Drive. As the team made their entry into the house of a suspected drug dealer, the occupant opened fire.
Deputy Martin was fatally wounded in the ensuing gunfire.
The other members of the SWAT team immediately returned fire, managing to subdue and arrest the shooter at the scene. There was no indication that any other individuals were involved in the shooting. The swift actions of the team ensured the sole perpetrator was taken into custody.
The man responsible for Deputy Martin's death was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for his actions. He would later die while incarcerated. Deputy Martin was survived by his son, and his death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers.
