In the early morning hours of January 24, 2004, a young life was tragically cut short in Colorado Springs. Dequincy Janeah King, a 19-year-old Black male, had recently moved to the city from Mississippi with hopes of finding a job to support his wife and stepchildren. The night of January 23, 2004, found King at Papasan's Sports Bar, which was hosting an after-hours party.
Feeling tired, he decided to go out to a car in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex to get some rest.
Friends checked on him periodically and found him to be fine. However, a check around 3:50 a.m. revealed a horrifying scene: King had been shot and was bleeding from the face. A female friend rushed him to Memorial Hospital, leaving him at the emergency entrance. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Dequincy Janeah King was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. on January 24, 2004.
The Colorado Springs Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Their inquiries revealed that King had been resting in the car when he was fatally shot. The parking lot where the car was situated was known for illicit activities, but the motive for the shooting remained unclear. In the years that have followed, the case has grown cold.
To date, there have been no arrests made in connection with the murder of Dequincy Janeah King, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains open, and authorities continue to ask for anyone with information to come forward. For his family, the pain of his unsolved murder lingers as they continue to wait for justice for the young man who had his whole life ahead of him.
