On Halloween morning, October 31, 2018, Jacob Michael Clymer, a 32-year-old male from Evergreen, Colorado, was fatally shot in Aurora. The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. outside the Fitzsimmon Junction Apartments near East Montview Boulevard and Billings Street. Clymer was there with his wife, Miranda, to sell an Xbox video game system for $250, an arrangement made online.
They were met by 15-year-old Brigham Mendez and another individual.
Mendez and his companion claimed they only had $245. After initially declining the offer, Clymer and his wife decided to accept the slightly lower amount. Despite their agreement, Mendez shot Clymer in the chest, head, and abdomen before fleeing the scene. According to his obituary, Jacob Clymer heroically stepped in front of his wife to protect her from the gunfire, an act of self-sacrifice that saved her life. First responders found Clymer on the ground with a gunshot wound and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, Aurora police quickly identified a suspect and arrested 15-year-old Brigham Mendez. He was charged with first-degree murder. Mendez later admitted that his intention was to rob the couple because he needed money. He ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. In January 2020, Brigham Mendez was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of Jacob Clymer.
