In the heart of downtown Denver, a promising life was tragically cut short on September 9, 2019. Alexis Victoria Bush, a 22-year-old female, was found deceased inside an apartment at 1255 19th St. She was a student at the University of Colorado Boulder, just four credits shy of earning her bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Anthropology. Born in Durham, North Carolina, Alexis had grown up as a military child before her family settled in Colorado.
She was remembered by loved ones for her enjoyment of music, the outdoors, and dance.
The discovery of Alexis's body came after police responded to the apartment for a welfare check. Upon arrival, they encountered a brief standoff with a man inside. After about an hour, a negotiator successfully convinced the man to exit the apartment. Inside, they found Alexis. The Denver Medical Examiner's office later confirmed that she had died from a single gunshot wound to the head, and her death was officially ruled a homicide.
The man who had been in the apartment with her body, 24-year-old Matthew Martin, was taken into custody. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. Reports from law enforcement indicated that Martin was Alexis's boyfriend. According to the probable cause statement, a friend of the victim had placed the initial 911 call requesting a welfare check after receiving a call from Martin himself, who had told the friend about the death. Matthew Martin was later jailed without bond in connection with the killing.
