Barrett Zef “Zefi” Kreb, a 9-year-old White/Caucasian male, was found dead on October 30, 2021, at his family’s home north of Colorado Springs in an incident authorities immediately described as an apparent murder-suicide. Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office were called to the residence and discovered two children and two adults dead.
In the days that followed, officials identified the victims as Barrett, his 13-year-old sister Felicity, and their mother, 50-year-old Yvette Siegert-Kreb; the fourth deceased person was their father, 55-year-old Christof Kreb.
Investigators publicly stated that evidence indicated Christof Kreb killed his wife and two children before taking his own life. News outlets reported that the family lived in the Gleneagle area just outside Colorado Springs, and that deputies were treating the scene as a domestic murder-suicide from the outset while awaiting the coroner’s determinations on exact causes and manners of death. As of those reports, authorities had not announced a motive.
Barrett’s name appeared in local and national coverage as the community absorbed the loss. Memorial pieces and remembrances referred to him by his given name and nickname “Zefi,” and local stations noted the private services held for the family in mid-November. The tragedy drew wide attention in Colorado media and beyond, with accounts emphasizing the suddenness of the violence and the absence of prior public warning signs.
No arrests were made in Barrett’s case. Law enforcement identified the children’s father, Christof Kreb, as the sole suspect and stated he died at the scene, leaving no one to face charges. Authorities encouraged anyone with information relevant to the timeline to contact investigators, but subsequent reporting centered on identification, community mourning, and the closed nature of the criminal inquiry following the suspect’s death.
