On March 5, 1986, Patrolman Sherman L. Toler, Jr., a 28-year-old officer with the New Mexico State Police, was tragically killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. The incident began when Patrolman Toler initiated the traffic stop and subsequently requested to search the trunk of the suspect's vehicle, a request that was granted by the driver.
