On March 15, 2024, at approximately 5:00 AM, New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare, 35, responded to a call about a driver with a flat tire on Interstate 40 near milepost 318, west of Tucumcari. The driver, later identified as Jaremy Alexander Smith, 32, of Marion, South Carolina, had been waving for help from other motorists.
