On May 28, 2022, 46-year-old Michael Arellano was fatally shot in Tucumcari, New Mexico, during his son's high school graduation party. The celebration, intended to honor his son's achievement, took a tragic turn following a verbal altercation between Arellano and 42-year-old Tyje Garrett, who was also in attendance.
Witnesses reported that tensions escalated between the two men, leading Arellano to leave the party on foot, heading north on Cemetery Road.
Garrett departed shortly after in his truck, driving past Arellano before turning around to confront him. The confrontation culminated with Garrett allegedly shooting Arellano multiple times. Arellano was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
Law enforcement swiftly apprehended Garrett in Logan, New Mexico, without incident. He was charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Quay County Detention Center. Subsequent investigations revealed Garrett's extensive criminal history, including previous convictions that led to additional charges of tampering with evidence and illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of battery against a household member.
In October 2024, after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder, Garrett was sentenced to life in prison for the killing of Michael Arellano. The presiding judge described the act as 'inhumane' and 'tragic,' underscoring the profound impact on the Arellano family and the community.
